In Ecuador there is no legal measure that provides for or at least supports the education of children with intellectual disabilities. The few schools which exist which welcome these children are very expensive and lack both material and human resources, whereas the training of specific social and health personnel to support this population is very poor.
This educational and institutional vulnerability, added to the fact that families frequently lack the financial and human resources which would enable them to properly care for their children, compounding their difficulties with previous situations of neglect while their mothers work, and with malnutrition, disease and accidents.
