In 2009, the per capita income of Haiti was 772 dollars, the poorest in the whole American continent and one of the most disadvantaged in the world. Its Human Development Index, calculated by UNDP in 2010 is 0.404, which places the country in 145th place (of 177) in the world, 6 places down from 2005, which means that Haiti is declining. Life expectancy at birth is 61.7 years and the estimated average years of schooling is less than 5, i.e., most of the population fails to complete primary school and therefore becomes functionally illiterate.
Even before the earthquake of 2010, almost half of the causes of deaths were attributed to HIV/AIDS, respiratory infections, meningitis and diarrhoeal diseases, including cholera and typhoid. 90% of Haiti's children suffer from waterborne diseases and intestinal parasites.
