According to the UNDP's Human Development Index of 2004, Ivory Coast is located in 163rd position of a total of 173 countries. Life expectancy at birth is 41.2 years and has declined lately because of the strong spread of HIV/AIDS among the population. Infant mortality is 102 per 1,000 live births.
The country's health situation is precarious and highlights a major shortcoming of health structures and personnel. Currently, the only clinic that exists in the whole sub-prefecture of Bingerville, excluding the health structures of Bingerville, is the Eloka Health Center, which is staffed by a nurse and a midwife. There is no social security system applicable to rural areas. The population, due to lack of resources and training, only turn to health centres in extremely serious cases, and often when it is too late.
Fundación del Valle works in Ivory Coast to support the training and education of its young people so that they can play an important part in the development of their communities.
